Types of Hardwood Flooring
There are two basic types of hardwood flooring constructed that are available on the market today: Solid and Engineered.
Solid hardwood flooring is exactly that: a solid piece of wood from top to bottom and end to end. The thickness of solid hardwood flooring can vary, but generally ranges from 3/4" to 5/16" to to bottom, and come in varing widths ranging from as small as 1" up to 12". One of the many benefits of having solid hardwood flooring is that it can be sanded and refinished many times. Solid hardwood flooring can be installed above or on grade, but should not be installed below grade (outside ground) level.

Engineered hardwood flooring is real wood floors that have been manufactured using from three up to nine layers of different wood veneers that are glued together to make up the floor thickness. The sub layers can be of the same species, or of different species. The grain of each layer runs in different directions from ply to ply, which makes it much more stable than solid hardwood flooring. This means that the hardwood will expand and contract much less than any solid hardwood flooring during fluctuations of humidity and temperature. The top layer of the engineered hardwood flooring consists of which ever species of wood you desire. Engineered hardwood flooring can be installed above, on or below grade.
